Open Studios with Jean Shin at the Museum of Arts and Design
Location: MAD 2 Columbus Circle, New York, NY
Date: Saturday, November 1, 2008, Two Sessions: 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM
Cost: Free

"Jean Shin will demonstrate the techniques used in her installation for Second Lives at MAD. Shin is best known for her labor-intensive process of transforming extensive accumulations of cast-off objects, such as broken umbrellas, scraps of discarded clothing or old prescription eyeglasses into visually alluring, conceptually rich works. Her sculptures and site-specific installations question the boundary between abstraction and representation. Simultaneously, the works examine the history of objects and their relationship to the body thereby suggesting a larger connection to our collective desires and struggles." Jean Shin's work is on exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design in "Second Lives: Remixing the Ordinary."
"Jean Shin was born in Seoul, Korea in 1971 and raised outside Washington D.C. She received a B.F.A. in painting and a M.S. in Theory, Criticism and History of Art, Design and Architecture in 1996 from Pratt Institute, New York. Shin has participated in the Projects series at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2004) and has exhibited in solo exhibitions at the Galerie Eric Dupont, Paris (2005); Frederieke Taylor Gallery, New York (2004); and the Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York (2003). She received a Fellowship Award in Sculpture from the New York Foundation of the Arts in 2003 and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Art Award in 2001."
