As the summer is winding down, decisions for fall are being made and the challenge of how best to use limited resources of budgets and time come into question.

Many of you may be asking: why attend IDSA's national conference this year? I realize that the concept of ROI (return on investment) is one that is more critical now than in the past several years.

The goal of this year's conference is simple: we need to come together to share our concerns and strategies for successfully navigating the current conflicting forces in the design and the global economies. I have always felt that IDSA's national conference is analogous to a design oasis, the one opportunity for designers to come together on a grand scale and celebrate, debate and learn about our field in both practice and education. The desert has been used throughout history as a setting for individuals and groups to seek direction and self-reflection.

What better design oasis than a hotel in the desert southwest, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright? The indoor/outdoor design of the hotel is a metaphor for an oasis. With natural spaces complemented by human scale architecture, it provides the ideal setting for large and small gatherings to facilitate interaction and discussion. We will supply the food for thought that will cover many of the polar opposites we have identified as subthemes for the conference.

We will also establish a network of member volunteers to capture the conference events and speakers and post them in real time in a follow-up blog on IDSA's web site. The goal is to provide a significant ROI by giving you a formal recap of what you experienced at the conference—a new dimension we feel is critical to complementing the direct conference experience.

I hope you agree that this year, IDSA's national conference delivers clear value and is a strong investment in helping you optimize your future strategies. We will supply the raw materials as the basis for ROI, and each of you can use this to replenish your own supply for the year ahead.

Join us for a "Discourse in the Desert," as we all seek to mediate the polar opposites we face in the current practice and education of design.
