MADEinNYC

The Web department at Thirteen/WNET is launching a Web-only short documentary series tentatively called "Made in NYC" (no affiliation with the organization, which is why the title will probably change).

The premise of the series is that modern New York is seen as a town that produces great cultural contributions like theater, music, and literature but not necessarily important or interesting manufactured products.

The series hopes to change that perception.

"Made in NYC" will profile New York City manufacturers and fabricators, large and small.

We're open to all sorts of manufacturing, from food production to garment making to heavy machinery. We're NOT -- at this point -- looking for small crafts makers, hobbyists, or jewelers.

Specifically, we're looking for companies that meet some of these criteria:

1. a company that will allow us to come film its operations, interview its employees and staff

2. a company that manufactures a product you wouldn't expect to find made in NYC

3. a company with historical significance -- has it been around for many years?

4. a company that is threatened by rising real estate rates and may have to leave NYC or shut down entirely

5. a company producing a "green" product, or a traditional product manufactured to be eco-friendly, like IceStone countertops made from recycled glass

Here are some examples:

- Spanjer Sign Corporation
Architectural signage and lettering since 1908.

- Henry Repeating Arms Company
Final days of a Brooklyn gun manufacturer moving to New Jersey for cheaper real estate.

- Baldwin Ribbon & Stamping Corp
Manufactures military insignias.

- Aurora Lampworks, Inc.
A restoration company for historic lighting fixtures.

- Cut Brooklyn
Hand-crafted, professional-grade kitchen cutlery.

- Bronx Bee Honey
Honey made by a beekeeper at St. Augustine Catholic church in the Bronx.

We're on a tight schedule: we'd like to begin shooting immediately after the July 4th weekend. [contact us here]
