Discover the thinking behind the 2008 Beijing Olympic Torch and how its IDEA-winning design reflects both Chinese cultural elements and the Olympic spirit with this very special presentation from the leader of Lenovo's Global Innovation Design Center. He'll talk about how his uniquely comprised design team created a new experience for users and how they designed the torch to communicate with a wide variety of audiences.

Yao Ying Jia wears a lot of impressive hats. Currently, he serves as vice president, Innovation Design Center, Lenovo (Beijing) Ltd.; director member of the China Industrial Design Association; vice- commissioner of Information Product Design Professional Committee China Industrial Design Association; standing director member of Beijing Industrial Design Advancement Committee; visiting professor at Guangzhou College of Design; and consultant for industrial design at Art and Design Academy, Tsinghua University.

After graduating from Qiqihaer University in 1996, Yao joined Lenovo as its very first industrial design professional. Over the past 10 years, he has continuously led the way of introducing brand-new industrial design concepts to China's IT field. He established the first industrial design team at Lenovo building an organizational structure characterized by multi-disciplinary coordination. Yao has also championed the idea of design based on local Chinese culture. His work with Lenovo has won a variety of international design awards-including recognition from IDEA, red dot, China RedStar, iF and Fortune magazine.

Through his work at Lenovo, Yao has helped lay a platform where more domestic industrial designers are able to demonstrate their abilities and compete with foreign peers, which contributes to a better understanding of China's design work among the international design community.
