JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
PROGRAM OFFICER Innovations in Sustainable Design Program
Washington, DC
ABOUT THE SUMMIT FOUNDATION
The Summit Foundation is a private family foundation with a staff of eight, located in Washington, DC. Our mission is to promote the health and well-being of the planet – its people and its natural environment. Currently the Foundation has two programs: Conservation of the Mesoamerican Reef and Global Population and Youth Leadership.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
“Innovations in Sustainable Design” is a program under development that seeks to harness human creativity and market forces to provide design solutions to our increasingly heavy environmental footprint on the planet. The ultimate goal of the program is to speed up the transition to products, processes and systems that minimize natural resource depletion, eliminate waste and toxicity, and emulate nature’s benign processes and energy flow. Examples of areas of exploratory interest include (but are not limited to) the built environment (including cities & buildings), transportation, carbon-neutral design, and industrial products and processes. Geographic focus is yet to be determined but the program will likely target areas of greatest potential impact, such as the U.S. and other highly industrialized nations, and possibly rapidly industrializing nations.
JOB SUMMARY
Working closely with the Executive Team and the Board of Trustees, the program officer will be responsible for completing the planning process (including identifying specific funding areas and strategies and prospective grant recipients); identifying cutting-edge and highly leveraged projects; monitoring, evaluating and overseeing grants; networking; and collaborating with other staff in carrying out the Foundation's mission. The program officer will be responsible for preparing materials for Board meetings, and designing and implementing outreach and other strategies to advance the program and its desired impact. The position will be based in Washington, DC.
QUALIFICATIONS & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
• A minimum of five years professional experience in a relevant field.
• A master’s degree in a field closely related to the program’s interests is strongly preferred, but it may be substituted by additional years of related professional experience.
• Demonstrable experience in green design and close familiarity with relevant non-profits, business/industrial sectors and government agencies in that field.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong analytical skills, and a self-starting style.
• Desire and ability to work well as a team member, and willingness to work closely with the Board of Trustees of a family foundation.
• Availability to travel domestically and internationally.
HOW TO APPLY
Please submit a cover letter, resume, three references, and two writing samples to Ms. Joan Parris, Office Manager, The Summit Foundation. No telephone inquiries, please.
