IDSANYC : Folio Series
The New York City chapter of IDSA is excited to invite you to a new series of career development events to help industrial designers grow professionally, and provide them with the opportunity to exchange ideas between more experienced designers. To kick off the series, IDSA will be hosting a one-day Career Expo at the Pratt Manhattan Campus. RSVP today, and make your participation a great return on investment. Hope to see you there!

WHO IS THIS EVENT FOR?
We invite participants from all career stages. The goal of the event is to bring together emerging designers, young professionals, career changers, those in a professional slump, or design professionals who are just interested in career development to come prepared with a portfolio and/or career-related questions.

FORMAT
Morning: Panel discussions:

: 1st Panel - Experienced designers on top of their game will discuss their career progression and share the secrets of their success. It will be followed by a Q&A session to allow the audience to gain more specific information.

Afternoon: One-on-one portfolio review:

10-15 design recruiters and industry professionals will be available to review portfolios. Participants will have approximately 10 minutes with each recruiter, and have the opportunity to ask questions, build contacts, and improve their portfolio.

BIOS
Angela Yeh : President, Yeh Ideology

Angela worked in design recruiting for ten years before heading out on her own to start Yeh IDeology. Previous to her recruiting work, she studied industrial design in the Masters program at Pratt Institute and honed her sharp eye for good design working as a designer and design manager. A well-known figure in the New York design community, Angela chaired the NYC chapter of the IDSA 2004-2005 and is currently Vice President of the IDSA Northeast District Chapter. Previous to her work in design, Angela received her BA in psychology from the University of Bridgeport, CT, and worked in the field of behavioral psychology. She brings her considerable people skills to each search that she takes on.


Jim Best : Pensa Design

Jim Best offers unique insights with his knowledge of design and business. He started his career designing medical equipment for companies such as Becton Dickinson, Biomedic Data Systems, and Bayer Diagnostics. Jim later worked at Smart Design and Machineart as a senior industrial designer, leading all aspects of the design process. He has designed products for a wide range of categories including childcare, consumer packaging, furniture, housewares, medical and home healthcare. Jim's work has been recognized with awards such as Businessweek / IDEA gold, Medical Design Excellence award, and the Chicago Athenaeum Good Design award. Jim has a BFA in Industrial Design from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA in Marketing from Fordham University.


Kacper Dolatowski : Senior Designer, Manager, Custom Design/Business Sales, Tiffany & Co.

Kacper Dolatowski is a Senior Designer and Manger of Custom Design Department at Tiffany & Co. Graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology with BFA in Industrial Design and Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland with MA in Product Design. Kacper is also co-founder of Axon Design Inc. a multidisciplinary design consulting firm specializing in commercial and residential lighting applications. Since year 2000 Axon Design Inc. participated in many high profile projects in USA, Europe and Asia. Recent projects include lighting for Jean-Georges – Perry St. restaurant, Sky Room at French Institute Alliance François NYC, NYU Dept. of Philosophy (with Steven Holl Architects), and private residences in Singapore and Honk Kong among others.

Kacper is also a contributing editor for 2+3D Design Magazine based in Krakow, Poland.


Tucker Viemeister : VP Creative, Studio Red at Rockwell Group

Tucker Viemeister is VP Creative of Studio Red at RockwellGroup. He founded the collaborative Studio Red dedicated to innovation for Coca-Cola, the team works with clients like Gap (Fourth & Towne), JetBlue (Terminal 5), Mercedes (events), and McDonald's. He's a Fellow of the Industrial Designers Society of America, was called "Guru" by BusinessWeek (8/97), "scruffy brand-meister" by the Architect's Newspaper (2/06) and dubbed "Industrial Design's Elder Wunderkind" when ID included him in America's hottest 40.

A graduate from Pratt Institute, he was a founder of Smart Design where he helped design the widely acclaimed OXO "GoodGrips" universal kitchen tools. He also was president of Springtime-USA, a partnership with the young Dutch industrial design company, he helped to found Razorfish's physical design capability and frogdesign's New York office. He has worked for clients like Corning, Apple, J&J, P&G, Timex, Levi's, Motorola, Vodaphone, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Nike, Toyota, and Kate Spade.

He serves on the Board of Directors of the Architectural League of New York, chair of the Rowena Reed Kostellow Fund and president of the International Design Network Foundation. He produced and designed Elements of Design: Rowena Reed Kostellow and the Structure of Visual relationships. Tucker teaches at NYU's ITP, holds 32 US Utility Patents and was named after a car.


Rick Goodwin : Assistant Chair and Graduate Admissions Coordinator, Pratt Institute Industrial Design; Partner, OgoSport LLC

Rick Goodwin is the Assistant Chair and Graduate Admissions Coordinator for the Industrial Design Department at Pratt Institute. He has taught in numerous areas in the department but has always taught Toy Design which is his greatest passion. When not at Pratt, Rick is working with his partners Kevin Williams and Jenie Fu at OgoSport LLC. OgoSport has launched a series of active play products for children and adults that can be found in over 600 toy and sporting goods stores around the country and the world. Their products have won numerous awards and have received extensive media coverage.

Rick is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a BS in Fine Arts and Pratt Institute with an MID in Industrial Design.


Steve Russak : Vice President, Innovation & Design, Kaz, Inc. + Chair, IDSA Design Management Section

Steve Russak is Vice President, Global Innovation & Design at Kaz, Inc., a market leader of Healthcare and Home Comfort products for Honeywell, Vicks and Braun. With offices and factories around the world, Steve created the Global Innovation & Design Studio for Kaz and is responsible for filling the pipeline with new product innovation for all the company's brands and categories.

Steve has spent his entire career bringing design innovation to the masses by merging the world of business strategy & marketing with design creativity and empathic design. Fresh out of design school in 1984, he was performing design research with renowned gerontologist, Patricia Moore, working to break down the stigma and fears of receiving a baseline mammography screen. Early on as a junior designer at Smart Design he quickly began leading programs, design teams and building accounts with all sized companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Kaz, or independent entrepreneurs.

Steve is a former Partner and Vice President of Smart Design, where for 15 years he helped build the firm and design everything from Oxo Good Grips and vaporizers to tampons and sanitary napkins. Before taking the helm at Kaz, Steve held leadership positions and consulted with world class firms such as Refac HumanFactors in New Jersey and Altitude in Boston. Steve's work has been recognized with numerous awards and patents.

Steve has chaired the IDSA NY Chapter and currently chairs IDSA's Design Management Section. He has chaired the IDSA/Businessweek Catalyst Award, juried the CES Innovation Awards and ID Magazine's Annual Design Review. He lectures frequently and has taught courses at Pratt Institute in New York City. Steve earned his BFA in ID from Rochester Institute of Technology and his MBA from Fordham's Graduate Business School.

Steve is fanatical about customizing his Ducati Monster, playing his drums and is always looking for people to jam with. He's a three-time top 20% finisher of the NYC Marathon but says his racing bicycle is now much easier on the knees.


Bay Brown : Recruiter, Roz Goldfarb Associates

Bay Brown is the recruiter for Industrial Design at Roz Goldfarb Associates. She regularly works with corporations and leading consultancies internationally to source talent. Bay brings with her a breadth of experience in the design disciplines. A design journalist by background, Bay has an eye for talent, having long mastered the art of the interview and the ability to read people quickly. While most recently serving as Senior Editor at Architecture magazine, she has contributed to venues ranging from Bravo Network's show Arts & Minds to Condé Nast Traveller and Interior Design magazines. Since receiving her BA from Barnard, Bay has been based in New York with travel abroad for work and a stint at the University of Virginia, where she earned a Masters in Architectural History.


Julie Alperen : Executive Recruiter, Janou Pakter, Inc.

Julie joined Janou Pakter, Inc. in 2003, bringing with her ten plus years of recruiting experience and heads up JPI's 3D practices group. This includes industrial and environmental design, architecture, interiors, retail design, visual merchandising, color and trend forecasting, usability, human factors and research, user interface and interaction design.

Earning a degree in philosophy and art from Brown University, Julie also completed several courses at Rhode Island School of Design. While enrolled at University College London, she studied art history. Following graduation, she worked in the publishing world - first as an editor and then as a literary agent. Prior to her position at JP, Julie played a hands-on role as an associate at an architecture and interior design firm. She is a current member of IDSA and AIA.

Julie's understanding of and personal experience with the 3D design world allows her to truly connect and partner with her clients and identify the best candidates for them, both in terms of talent and cultural fit. She has worked with clients worldwide, including Procter & Gamble, Palm Inc., Habitat, Tsao & McKown Architects, The North Face, Rockwell Group, Whirlpool, Nokia, Kohler and REX.
