When: Wednesday, May 16, 2007, 6:30-8:00 pm
Where: The Hudson Companies, Inc.
826 Broadway (@ 12th St.) 11th Floor, NYC 10003

Speakers: Henry Gifford & Chris Benedict

For the last ten years Chris Benedict, Architect and Henry Gifford, Mechanical Sytem Designer have been working as a team designing and monitoring the construction of buildings that are extremely energy efficient, healthy and durable. Their current new construction jobs use 15% of the energy for heat and hot water of typical apartment buildings in New York City and 50% of the electricity. All of their projects are built for the same cost as typical construction.

Within the last few years, green building has become a hot topic for consumers and the media. Several disturbing trends have taken on mythological status. Chris and Henry will examine these trends, they include:

Lots of glass to "connect" with the outdoors
Geothermal heat pumps
Green roofs
Solar panels

Chris and Henry will show how one of their current projects would have turned out if they hadn't been hired, and instead, current trendy items were used to make the building "green". They will show the number crunching necessary to see that these trendy items add to construction cost with questionable benefits and compare the trendy items to their design approach.
