Colonial Revival and the Modern Metropolis

The American Style: Colonial Revival and the Modern Metropolis brings together extraordinary furniture, decorative objects, and photographs to reveal, in New York City and beyond, the Colonial Revival movement in the realms of architecture and design. The exhibition covers the fertile period from the 1890s to the present, focusing on the years from 1900 to the 1930s, when New York City, through department stores, museums, and more, was the center for the style's promotion nationwide.

A beautifully illustrated companion book, written by the co-curators, is co-published by the Museum and the Monacelli Press.

Among her many innovations, Florence Knoll introduced padded and tufted upholstered chair seats without armrests, so that space flowed effortlessly around them, and custom-colored curtains to compensate for the unnatural quality of the new fluorescent lights. In this lecture, Christine Gorby will explore how Florence Knoll reconceptualized the use of textiles as integral architectural elements within the modern interior and in the context of dynamic social and technological changes.

Christine Gorby is an architect and associate professor of architecture, Pennsylvania State University, College of Arts and Architecture.

Born in New Jersey in 1964, Harry Allen received an undergraduate degree from Alfred University before moving to New York City and earning a Masters in Industrial Design from the Pratt Institute. His first job was in the retail design department of Prescriptives Cosmetics. In 1993 he established his design consultancy, Harry Allen Design, and the same year designed and produced a line of furniture called Living Systems, which he showed at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Today his furniture is in production with a variety of clients including Habitat, Dune, Magis, and Umbra. He has just launched a new line of modular seating for Dune called Pipeline.

His experience at Prescriptives lead to more interior design work. His first major solo project, the Moss store in New York’s SoHo district, received international praise. Since then, he has designed a number of successful interiors including offices, restaurants, and residences. His largest project is a chain of retail stores called Hushush in Japan, and most recently he completed the interior of the DuPont Corian Design Studio in Philadelphia.

Harry’s unique vision also extends to product design, with clients including Wireworks, Magis, Steuben, Umbra, and Gaia & Gino. His life-cast REALITY product line for Areaware has proven to be a great success in the marketplace and his First Aid Kit for Johnson & Johnson has received wide attention in the press.

Over the years, Harry has produced a multitude of innovative lighting. His Ceramic Foam Lamps were featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1994 show “Mutant Material in Contemporary Design” and have since been added to the Museum’s permanent design collection. In addition to much experimental studio work, Allen has designed production lighting fixtures for George Kovacs, Sputnik, and IKEA.
Due to his versatile nature, Harry Allen is often asked to span multiple design disciplines and develop advance concept work for clients. These projects, like Allen’s involvement in the repositioning of La Mer cosmetics, his advance concept work for MAC cosmetics, and his “souvenir plate” project for the Morgans Hotel Group, require acute brand sensitivity. However, his first total corporate re-branding project was completed in 2008 for the professional airbrush cosmetics company Temptu.

From the beginning, Harry Allen’s work has been recognized with honors and awards. His achievements include the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s Modernism/Young Designer Award, two Industrial Design Society of America IDEA Awards, and he has been featured in ID Magazine’s Annual Design Review four times. Visualizing the Value of Nature

Shared natural resources underpin the global economy, but our current economic system does not acknowledge their worth. Our principle measure of success, the gross domestic product, or GDP, excludes the worth and loss of ecosystems and the services they provide, because as valuable as they are, they have no price.

The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) is a major scientific study into the global economic costs of ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss. It was initiated by the G8 + 5, hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme, and is supported by the European Commission, Germany, UK, Netherlands, Norway, Japan and Sweden. The study has drawn together knowledge from experts in science, economics, business, development, and policy to identify and develop practical actions in response to the growing evidence of the impacts of biodiversity loss.

In collaboration with TEEB, we would like to challenge the world’s design community to produce cutting-edge, informative visualizations to help us understand the value of nature. Understanding the costs of biodiversity loss through data visualization may force us to reassess what we value and potentially change the way we look at nature.

David Gallo was one of the first oceanographers to use a combination of submarines and robots to map the undersea world. The Director of Special Projects at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, he has taken part in an exploration of RMS Titanic and the German battleship Bismarck using the Russian MIR submarines, as well as a recent expedition to find the lost WWII submarine USS Grunion.

Dr. Gallo is currently interested in understanding the relationship between humanity and the sea. He was closely involved in the formulation and development of the Liquid Jungle Laboratory of Panama, a venture designed to better understand the interaction between people, tropical forests, and coastal marine habitats.

At Woods Hole, he works closely with scientists and engineers at the forefront of global exploration and discovery. He has participated in numerous expeditions to the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, and to the Mediterranean Sea.

Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 New York City subway map, produced by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, was considered a design triumph — earning itself a place in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art — but it was criticized as confusing to passengers. A new version of the subway map was released earlier this year, re-raising the enduring dilemma: how best to achieve both functionality and beauty. What alternate versions of the map might be created to encourage ridership and appeal aesthetically? Join the creators of several subway maps, including John Tauranac and Massimo Vignelli, for a discussion about designing for the riding public, featuring Eddie Jabbour, creator of the Kick Map and the NYC subway app, and Paul Shaw, author of Helvetica and the New York City Subway System: The True (Maybe) Story (110 Editions, 2009).

Get Zero challenges you to prove us right--whether you are an architect, interior designer, product designer, landscape designer, graphic designer, communication designer. For the first time in the eight-year history of our annual Next Generation Design Competition, we've supplied an actual site as a test case for entries: an existing eight-story, 1960s-era office building in downtown Los Angeles, owned by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), a partner in this year's competition and one of the world's biggest landlords. Recently the GSA charged itself with bringing its enormous stock of buildings--more than 9,600--to zero environmental impact. We now bring that challenge directly to you: Get Zero. The winning entry will receive $10,000, but the potential impact of this year's competition is even more exciting and far reaching, as all the top entries will be innovative design ideas that could be applied to scores of similar buildings across the country and around the world.

To enter, provide design "fixes" that will bring the building to the highest level of sustainable performance in a memorable, beautiful, original way. Transform the entire structure and its surroundings, or tackle one or two individual elements such as facade, roof, fenestration, interior furnishings, or signage. Concentrate on what you know best, and apply immense skill and creative energy in ways that will fully deploy your training and imagination.

School of Constructed Environments presents, Quotidian Product: Paris / New York, the work and dialogue of two significant mid career product design studios based in Paris with similar but contrasting Manhattan counterparts. Each studio is known for meaningful and extraordinarily well crafted and detailed products. Small firms who from a distance create things, that may look everyday, but upon examination communicate subtle intelligence and uncommon sensitivity to our daily experience.

Designers will present projects, and explore cultural difference and likeness through conversation. Paris and New York share histories of liberty, luxury, poverty, immigration, and national identity. Through the lens of respective metropolis, themes will include the modernist promise, the disappearing middle class, future thinking and daily practice. As a French expatriate based in New York, design curator and strategist, Laetitia Wolff has graciously offered to join our conversation as well as interpret language.

On October 1, The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, in partnership with GE, hosts the conference entitled "Why Design Now? Solving Global Challenges," part of this year’s National Design Triennial. In the spirit of its theme of global participation, we're proud to be hosting the live broadcast of the entire event, extending its reach beyond New York City to the rest of the world. Though you should really just take an R&D day and watch the entire event, we've picked out a few highlights to help you plan. First, TED founder Richard Saul Wurman will set the tone with his keynote at 9:10am: "Ignorance is Bliss: The More We Know, the Less We Understand." We're looking forward to hearing from Chris Conley, Founding Director of Gravity Tank, on designing products for everyday lives at 10:50am and Smart Design's Dan Formosa and Eric Freitag's presentation of the Cimzia Prefilled Syringe Case Study at 2:50pm. Finally, moderated panel discussions about green design, international design, and healthcare reform dot the conference at 9:50am, 11:30am and 3:10pm.
